If you were asked to name a famous inventor, scientist, engineer who first comes to mind?
Was it a man (Brunel, Einstein, Edison, Fleming, Stevenson to name a few) or perhaps a female (Marie Curie anyone)? Was the image of them in your head in black and white or colour?
The following video 'What are you going to make?' was made for International Women’s Day, to celebrate women inventors, how they’ve changed the world, and are inspiring the next generation.
How often do we hear about them and their achievements?
In order to transform some of the preconceptions that the public, young people, their teachers and parents have about who becomes an inventor, scientist, technologist, engineer or mathematician diverse positive role models are vital. It is in the interest of meeting the needs of society, that the general population is reflected in the workforce.
Females are still underrepresented in engineering and other STEM areas. They represent untapped talent and could have a big influence on the world. Let's raise awareness of the women in STEM, all too often unrecognised, who have and are shaping our society!
Could you be a role model?
We would love to hear more about the inspiring women in STEM. Email us if you’d like to be a role model for Sparxx or WES and let us know which women in STEM inspire you (@Sparxxgirls, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest).
